Questions and answers
Everything people ask before and after trying catu. If yours isn’t here, write to us.
The basics
Is catu free?
Yes. Everything that runs on your Mac is free: screenshots, the editor, screen recording, scrolling capture, text from the screen, clipboard history and dictation. The Web app plan adds the cloud: sharing any capture as a link, encrypted storage, your Library on the web and comments. The Web app plan is €4,99 a month or €49,90 a year, with a 14-day free trial.
What is catu, in one sentence?
One menu-bar app for everything you capture on a Mac: copy, screenshot, record and dictate, with a link to share when you want one, instead of a separate app and subscription for each.
Which Macs does catu run on?
Any Mac on macOS 15 or later, Apple silicon or Intel. Dictation needs macOS 26 and Apple Intelligence, because the transcription and the tidy-up run on the Mac itself.
Is catu available for Windows, iPhone or iPad?
Not yet. catu is a Mac app. An iPhone app is planned for early 2027. Links you share open in any browser, on any device, so the people you send them to need nothing.
Where do I download catu?
From the Mac App Store, where every update arrives automatically. Until the launch, leave your email on catu.app and you’ll get one message when it’s out.
Does catu replace the built-in Mac screenshot tool?
It can. catu uses ⇧⌘2 for screenshots, ⇧⌘3 for recordings and ⇧⌘5 for text from the screen, so macOS’s own ⇧⌘3 and ⇧⌘5 keep working until you turn them off in System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts › Screenshots. Settings › Shortcuts in catu explains the one-time change.
Capturing
How do I record my screen with sound on a Mac?
Press ⇧⌘3, drag the area or pick a window, and switch on the microphone, your camera and the Mac’s own sound on the recording bar before you press Start. Pause with ⌥⇧⌘3 and stop with ⇧⌘3 again. The recording is ready at once, with a Trim button if you want to cut the ends.
How long can a recording be?
Up to 10 minutes per recording, not counting pauses. That keeps files quick to upload and watch. For something longer, stop and start a second recording.
Can I record my camera and my screen at the same time?
Yes. Turn the camera on in the recording bar and you appear in a bubble in the corner of the recording, mirrored as you expect. Turn it off at any point while recording.
Can catu capture a whole web page that scrolls?
Yes. Choose Scrolling Capture from the menu, pick the window, and scroll to the bottom. catu stitches the page into one image and opens it in the editor.
How do I copy text from an image, a video or a PDF on a Mac?
Press ⇧⌘5 and drag over the text you can see on screen. catu reads it and puts it on your clipboard as text, so you can paste it anywhere. It works on anything you can see, including images, videos, and apps that don’t let you select text.
What can I do to a screenshot before I send it?
The editor adds arrows, lines, shapes, text and numbered steps, blurs or pixelates anything private, hides only the text in an area, magnifies a detail, spotlights a part of the picture, and crops. Then copy it, save it, or share it as a link.
Does the Mac have a clipboard history? How does catu’s work?
macOS keeps only your last copy. catu keeps your last 30, searchable from the menu bar: text, links, colours, images and files. Click one or press ⌘1 to ⌘9 to copy it back. Anything copied from a password manager, or that looks like a password, is never kept.
How does dictation work, and is my voice uploaded?
Hold ⌥Space and talk (you can change the shortcut in Settings). Let go and what you said is on your clipboard, ready to paste, tidied up by Apple Intelligence: no ums, proper punctuation, a new line when you say so. Everything happens on your Mac. No audio is kept and nothing is sent anywhere. It needs macOS 26 and Apple Intelligence turned on.
What permissions does catu ask for, and why?
Screen Recording, to take screenshots and recordings and read text from the screen. Microphone and Camera, only when you switch them on in the recording bar or use dictation. catu doesn’t use Accessibility: dictation runs on a normal shortcut and you paste the result yourself. catu asks for each one the first time it’s needed and explains it.
Sharing and the cloud
Can I put a password on a link or make it expire?
Yes, both, from the clip’s page in your Library. A password is asked for before the clip opens. Links can expire after 7, 30 or 90 days, or never. You can change either at any time without changing the link.
How do comments work?
People who open your link can comment, with their name if they’re signed in or a name they type if they’re not. On a recording a comment can be pinned to a moment, so clicking it jumps the video there. You decide per clip whether anyone, only signed-in people, or nobody can comment, and you can remove comments or block a guest.
Will I know when someone opens or comments on my clip?
Yes, if you want. catu emails you the first time a link you shared is opened, and when someone comments, at most once an hour per clip. Each has its own switch in Settings, and every email has a link to turn it off.
How much storage does the Web app plan include?
100 GB of encrypted storage, with clips up to 2 GB each. Your Library shows how much you’ve used, and deleting a clip frees its space at once.
Where is my data stored?
In the European Union: the account database in Ireland and the encrypted files in Paris. Your clips are encrypted before they leave your Mac, and the privacy policy lists every provider involved.
Plans and account
What does the Web app plan cost, and is there a trial?
€4,99 a month, or €49,90 a year, which is two months free. The Web app plan starts with a 14-day free trial: you add a card, and nothing is charged if you cancel before the trial ends. Prices include no tax; it’s added where it applies.
What happens to my clips if I stop paying?
They stay, and so does your Library. Links you already shared keep working and people can still watch and comment. What stops is uploading new clips and setting links to last more than 30 days, until you subscribe again.
Can I buy the Web app plan inside the Mac app?
No. The Web app plan is a cloud subscription, bought on catu.app in your account’s Settings. The Mac app is the same for everyone and never shows a purchase.
How do I cancel or change my plan?
In Settings › Plan on catu.app, click Manage billing. You can switch between monthly and yearly, update your card, download invoices, or cancel. The Web app plan stays until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
How do I sign in?
With your Apple ID, or with a code sent to your email. The Mac app uses Sign in with Apple. You can add two-step verification with an authenticator app, with backup codes in case you lose it.
Is catu an alternative to Loom, CleanShot, Shottr or a clipboard manager?
It does the jobs of all of them from one menu-bar icon: screenshots and markup, screen recording with a share link, scrolling capture, text from the screen, clipboard history and dictation. The Mac side is free, and the cloud side costs less than most of those apps on their own.
